Traveling Man – Christmas Magic

the wonder of Christmas provided by Brothers in Tampa, Florida

Hello, my Brothers, The Traveling Man RW Anthony Prizzia here again with a great new find just a little South of Tampa, Florida. As I have said a million times, Freemasons are like Cheerios in milk; we somehow find each other and connect almost like it is in our DNA.

My mother and stepdad have lived in Sun City for the past 20 years. I have always tried to get to a lodge meeting down there, but I need the right time and enough time to fit in during my visits. This past Christmas was also one of those times, but while sitting by the pool, a friend saw my ring and asked me if I was going to check out the light show at the Mason youth camp. I was like, wait, what did you say?

Video of the Masonic Park & Youth Camp Christmas Light Show

Less than 5 miles away, there was a Masonic Park and Youth Camp, and for the first time, they were putting on a Christmas Light Show set to music that you could tune into on your car radio. I looked at my parents and said well, I know what we are doing after Christmas day dinner. Pulling up in our car the lights were beaming brightly into the sky from the entrance. Brothers from all over have retired here, and I got to introduce myself to one after the other as we made our way to the main entrance to pay admission. For a carload, it was a donation of $29.95 and worth every penny. Over a million lights were flashing, synchronized to music spanning the 1.2-mile drive-through path. At the end of the light show, I got to say goodbye to a few more brothers, and we headed back home.

This fantastic event was yet another genuine way that Freemasonry sheds light on the world and makes it a little bit brighter! Below is a little history of the Camp from their website. If you are ever in the Tampa/Sun City area during the holiday season, make sure you check them out; you will love it. And if you make it to the Camp, please say “Hello” for me!

In 1969, seventeen Masonic Lodges from surrounding districts incorporated the Masonic Park and Youth Camp, Inc. as a 501(3)c nonprofit corporation. The purpose of this corporation is to own, develop, improve, operate, and manage a camp for the primary use of young men, women, and families. The Masonic Park seeks to promote such people’s moral, intellectual and physical well-being through education in the conservation of wildlife and natural resources.

The Masonic Park provides an opportunity for young people to learn and develop leadership and physical fitness by providing them lodging amenities, outdoor athletic facilities, canoeing, hiking, lecture and wildlife exploration, indoor entertainment halls, dining facilities, and much more. In the same year, the Masonic Park and Youth Camp, Inc. purchased 204 pristine acres of wilderness property. The property is bordered by three-quarter miles of the Little Manatee River and has a small lake. One reason for such a purchase was to provide accommodations for RVs, motor homes, and motor coaches. As part of the park development, we’ve incorporated over 125 acres of hiking trails. Along the trails, you’ll find some of the most beautiful wildlife Florida offers.

The Masonic Park and Youth Camp has a unique, outdoor Masonic Lodge that is centrally located within the park

We have partnered with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN). The Commission’s commitment to research, education, and conservation of Florida wildlife complement the overall purpose and design of the Masonic Park. The FYCCN’s bold new program, jointly sponsored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Wildlife Foundation of Florida, leads the effort to reconnect Florida’s children with traditional outdoor activities. As part of a statewide network of conservation centers, the program is designed to encourage and empower kids to participate in traditional outdoor recreation. Experts teach them how to safely enjoy the outdoor heritage we have worked so hard to maintain. The FYCCN includes Wild Outdoor Hubs offering deep-wood experiences that connect to Near Outdoor Centers, offering experiences closest to children in their everyday lives. As the development of the Masonic Park and Youth Camp continues, our partners play a vital role in our mission to educate, promote and support the development of youth activities.

HISTORY OF WESTERN STAR LODGE #15 F&AM

Meet one of the oldest Masonic Lodges in New York State

Western Star Lodge #15
On Saturday, December 17, 2022 the Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master and nearly the entire Grand Line will join with the Officers, Brothers and Family of Western Star Lodge No. 15, of the Oneida Masonic District and Rededicate the Lodge on its 225th Anniversary. Below, is a brief history of the Lodge.
The Western Star Lodge history goes back to the early settlement of this area, and in fact two of the first settlers of what was to become Bridgewater were Joseph Farwell and Ephriam Waldo, lodge brothers who were among the petitioners of Western Star. The original petition, dated April 21, 1796 was filed to form a lodge and the charter wasgranted on January 18th, 1797. The Lodge was known as Western Star Lodge #59 F&AM. The Lodge first met to the south of this location at what was known as Farwell’s Hill. In 1815 it was decided to build at the intersection of the new Cherry Valley Turnpike and the Utica to New Berlin road. In 1816 a new building was erected with the Warren Chapter #22 R.A.M. on South Street on the site of the Cottage Hotel barn. It was removed to its present location in 1864. Major repairs were made in 1872 and 1892. The dimensions of the building and its interior Lodge meeting room are by design specific to the Masonic ritual and are unique to early buildings in post-colonial upstate New York. This Lodge is the oldest lodge in Oneida County that has met continuously for over 223 years. Western Star Lodge is also one of the oldest lodges in New York State. The Lodge has also been featured in a magazine article and in a book on early Masonic Symbols in Upstate New York.

Recommended reading for the New Year

It is said Freemasonry is embedded in Hermetic principles incepting from various religions the Egyptians, Hebrews, Babylonian, and ancient India, etc. Some Masons postulate that there is no esotericism in Freemasonry and conclude no reciprocity to Egypt. I advise Brethren to read the Cooke Manuscript the supposed 2nd oldest masonic manuscript after the Regis Manuscript it reads:
“In this manner was the [a]foresaid art begun in the land of Egypt, by the [a]foresaid master Englet, and so it went from land to land, and from kingdom to kingdom. After that, many years, in the time of King Athelstan, which was sometimes king of England, by his councilors, and other greater lords of the land, by common assent, for great default found among masons, they ordained a certain rule amongst them: one time of the year, or in 3 years as need were to the king and great lords of the land, and all the commonalty, from province to province, and from country to country, congregations should be made, by masters, of all masters, masons, and fellows in the [a]foresaid art, and so, at such congregations, they that be made masters should be examined, of the articles after written, and be ransacked whether they be able and cunning to the profit of the lords [having] them to serve and to the honor of the [a]foresaid art.”
Nonetheless, since we are in a different era and age of information there is a pubescent of generational Masons who are seeking light and interest in esotericism. Freemasonry is modifying and becoming more focused on the educational aspect of the craft. Albert Mackey once said: “So there are some Masons who think the mere act of initiation is at once followed by an influx of all masonic knowledge. They need no further study or research. All that they require to know has already been received by a sort of initiation process.”

Mackey also says, “One who commits to memory the questions and answers of the catechetical lectures, and the formulas of the ritual, but pays no attention to the history and philosophy of the Institution, is commonly called a Parrot Mason, because he is supposed to repeat what he has learned without any conception of its true meaning.”

Here are my Top 5 recommended esoteric books:

1. Manly P. Hall, “The Lost Key of Freemasonry: The Legend of Hiram Abiff”It reveals the basic esoteric symbolism of the 3 blue lodge Degrees, interpreting the spiritual ties in Freemasonry, but also that the craft is more than a mere social organization, as it is a Mystery School.
2. J.S.M Ward, “Who is Hiram Abiff”

This Book goes into the origins of Hiram Abiff analyzing the Mesopotamian and Greek Theology connection to Hiram with Tammuz and Adonis. Mr. Ward wrote a plethora of esoteric works; although he was a controversial figure his works are noteworthy.

3. John Fellows A.M, “The Mysteries of Freemasonry: Or an Exposition of the Religious Dogmas and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians”

This book written in 1860 explains the Mysteries of Freemasonry and its dogmatic connection to Ancient Egypt.

4. J.D Buck, “The Symbolism of Freemasonry or Mystic Masonry”

This read explores mystical aspects of Freemasonry and the spiritual significant effect one obtains through the initiations.

5. William James Hutchinson, “The Spirit of Masonry”

This Book concentrates on the inner mysteries of the Masonic ceremonies and rites as well as the nature of the lodge, its furniture, and jewels.

“To live in the world without becoming aware of the meaning of the world is like wandering about in a great library without touching the books.”

NEW YORK MASONIC HISTORY

FREEMASONRY IN NEW YORK STATE

Freemasonry’s journey to the New World and the Empire State

No one knows exactly when the first Mason stepped foot on the shores of the new world, but Freemasonry’s journey in the British colonies of North America began sometime in the 1730s. During this early time of building a new country in a land that promised prosperity but often delivered a difficult living, Freemasonry was a welcome luxury for the men risking everything. The sanctuary provided by the Lodge to these Brothers must have been nothing less than God sent. There is an unmeasurable benefit to a man who can bring his troubles before a Lodge and receive help and in turn offer help to others in their time of need.

By the late 1730s, the colonies were close to being well-established and early tensions were already being felt between Britain and the early political, constitutional, and legal systems established in the colonies. Most Lodges in The Colonies operated under the provincial jurisdictions of the Grand Lodges of England, Scotland, or Ireland. During this early time from around 1700 – 1783 of establishing Freemasonry in the colonies, Provincial Grand Masters were appointed by the Premier Grand Lodge of England. As tensions grew between Britain and the colonies if there were any tensions between the Grand Lodge of England and the newly Chartering Provincial Grand Lodges in the colonies, they remained relatively subdued.

Sir John Johnson

Sir John Johnson Provincial Grand Master (1771-1776) and Loyalist to Britain avoiding arrest in 1776 fled to Canada taking with him the Warrant for the Moderns Lodges of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York and leaving them without a Provincial Grand Master. To add complication to treason the Ancient Grand Lodge of England (The Ancients) organized their own Provincial Grand Lodge of New York. For a time, Lodges in New York were operating under one of two Grand Lodges. A Warrant dated September 5, 1781, issued by the “Athol Charter” or Ancients Grand Lodge of England officially formed the Grand Lodge of New York. This unified Lodges in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Shortly after, under the leadership of Chancellor Robert R. Livingston on December 15, 1782, the Grand Lodge of New York officially organized as the second Grand Lodge in the United States of America.
Serving as Grand Master for the next 17 years (1784 – 1801), Most Worshipful Livingston laid the groundwork for Freemasonry in New York State. Most notably because the Provincial Grand Lodge Warranted by “The Ancients” which fled with Sir John Johnson to Canada, and Brother Livingston being the Master of a Lodge under the Jurisdiction of “The Moderns”, Brother Livingston united the two branches of English Freemasonry in New York State years before they united in Britain. In addition, he administered the oath of Presidential Office to President and Brother George Washington using the Bible from St. John’s Lodge #1, Ancient York Masons the oldest Lodge chartered by the Grand Lodge of New York, Warranted in 1757. The Lodge still owns this Bible and uses it to swear in each New York Grand Master. Using this same Bible at the inauguration of Presidents Warren G. Harding (1921), Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953), Jimmy Carter (1977), and George H. W. Bush (2001).

The George Washington Inaugural Bible still travels around the country at important events like the inauguration of the President, the Governor of New York State, and the Mayor of New York City. On occasion it travels to other states for display to the general public and also makes an appearance or two in the media. To learn more about the history of the Bible, click here.

The years following the Revolutionary War, began an era of building that would become the United States of America as we understand it today. Shortly after those early years as an independent nation, on June 6, 1787, the Grand Lodge of New York declared itself independent from the Grand Lodge of England.

HOLIDAY DRINKS FOR 2022

What to bring this Season

Hello again my Brothers and Friends!

This is the time of year, I usually write about ideas on gift giving, or travels from my past. However, this year, I want to touch on a subject that is very close to home for me. First, let me disclose that I do in fact get paid by Bonterra Organic Estates to travel & meet people all over the world. My job is literally to eat and drink with people and talk about eating and drinking. Those in my family and that know me all agree that a more perfect job could not have been created for me, and I am blessed to be in this profession.

Let’s start with the most important drink you can drink during the holiday season: water. Being in the business, and partaking of adult beverages for many of my work hours, I can say that the only way to do that and remain healthy is to hydrate as much as possible. Water is not only your most important friend during parties, but it allows you to remember how much fun you had the next day. It is very easy to over indulge and get into trouble without water, so keep that in mind during your next social gathering.

Now that we are properly hydrated, we can touch on one question that I get during almost every education event that I speak at. People always ask, “what is the proper way to drink this or that”? Or they tell me that they were told in the past that they are drinking their beverage the wrong way. I can not shout this loud enough, THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO DRINK A BEVERAGE THAT YOU ENJOY. I usually start all my education classes with a statement that there is no wrong way to drink a drink. If you like your Sav Blanc warm, or your Cabernet with ice in it then drink it that way. If you like your whiskey with a giant ice rock, or neat (no ice) then drink it that way.

I hope all of my brothers and friends have a very happy and healthy holiday season and if you do enjoy an adult beverage please do it responsibly, designate a dry driver, and don’t forget plenty of H20. And just in case you are stuck and need a few suggestions for a wine/spirit to bring to an event, because you can’t show up empty handed, here are a few suggestions.
